Abortion is something that greatly grieves me, not only because of my belief in God and the sanctity of life, but through what He has shown me in personal trial.
Over the last eight years, I have had a total of nine pregnancies. Six of these have been miscarriages, the last one this past January. All of these miscarriages have been extremely hard, deep trials, ones that only God could help us to pull through.
My strength comes from Him. Looking back now, I can see that He’s used my miscarriages to show me just how precious, marvelous and awe-inspiring life in the womb truly is.
This past miscarriage occurred at 13 weeks (the baby had passed at ten weeks). I woke up and knew something was wrong. We went to the hospital and underwent the horrible ultrasound that always happens during a miscarriage–the room is eerily silent and the technician does not utter a word.
A few hours later, the doctor entered the room and said in a jovial manner, “Well, yep, you’ve miscarried. You will pass the tissue over the next day or so. Sign these forms.”
The next day, it happened. This time it was different, though. I had delivered our little baby, but God showed us something much more. No, it wasn’t tissue. Tissue. I type that with such disgust. Because that day, I held in the palm of my hand, our child.
I can tell you with absolute certainty that the human being cradled in the palm of my hand was not a blob of tissue.
As I stared in amazement at God’s handiwork, I witnessed ten weeks of little fingers and toes, hands and feet, legs, arms, elbows, chest, head, eyes, lips, and beneath the skin a brain and a once beating heart. This was not just “tissue” — this was a person, like you and I, like your child, your sibling, your mother, your father, your neighbor and your friend.
This was our child.
We have mourned over this child and the five others, just as you would any person living outside the womb today. Life starts at conception. Having witnessed this miracle so personally, I pray that others would come to realize that abortion is in fact the taking of a human life. There is no other way to spin it.
