The story of Charlie Gard has taken the world by storm. On June 27th, desperate parents, Connie and Chris, lost their last legal battle for their son’s life.
Last August, the UK couple gave birth to a health little boy named Charlie. At a month old, Charlie began showing symptoms of what turned out to be a rare genetic condition called mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, a condition causing chronic muscle degeneration and eventual brain damage.
The couple, determined to save their son’s life, found a doctor in America willing to administer a trial therapy. With the help of friends and strangers on GoFundMe, they managed to raise the necessary 1.8 million dollars for the ambulatory flight and treatment.
However, Charlie’s doctors had a different plan. Despite the wishes of the family, the hospital staff has decided that Charlie is to be taken off of life support. The couple took their case to the European Court of Human Rights where their plea was rejected.
Over the weekend, the couple garnered support from people around the world and hope. Even President Trump sent a tweet in support of Charlie:
In the heart-wrenching video below, Chris Gard says, “If he’s still fighting, we’re still fighting. And he’s still fighting over there, believe me, he’s still fighting.”
